Indonesian Papua Agarwood

Thursday, May 23, 2019
The high selling price of sap and agarwood trees currently makes many Kotabaru farmers begin to be interested in developing and cultivating agarwood trees. Besides having a high economic price, gaharu trees can also grow in tropical forest areas. The development of the agarwood tree is currently unknown to many people.

Only certain people develop and plant this tree. In fact, the benefits of the agarwood tree business can change the level of people's welfare in just a few years. Aside from being able to grow in forest areas, aloes trees can also grow in human grounds. Therefore, residents have many opportunities to plant trees that produce this fragrant sap.

The amount of sap produced from the agarwood tree depends on the planting and harvesting of trees. For example, for planting ages of 9 to 10 years, each tree trunk can produce about 2 kilograms of agarwood sap. While the price of agarwood sap reaches Rp5-20 million per kilogram. Prices depend on the type and quality of agarwood sap.

For gaharu sap which has low quality and yellow, it sells for IDR 5 million per kg, while for gaharu tree sap which has black or good quality is sold at IDR 15-20 million per kg. One of the Kotabaru farmers who has developed this agarwood tree is Miran, a resident of Langkang Village, East Sea Island Regency. According to him, to plant gaharu trees and produce lots of sap, special care is needed.

When gaharu trees are around 5-8 years old, trees that grow like natural forest trees need to be injected with drugs that secrete sap. Each tree needs one ampule at a price of Rp. 300 thousand. Miran claims, he has sold around 50 gaharu trees that are around 1-3 years old with a value of Rp19 million.

He also planted 500 agarwood trees at the age of one year and about 50 cm high. Because it has a growing nature that is not much different from other forest plants, every hectare of land can be planted with around 500 gaharu trees with a spacing of about 3-4 times 6 meters. He obtained gaharu tree seeds from Samarinda, East Kalimantan, which had previously been developed from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Seed prices start from Rp. 7,500 to Rp. 10,000 per tree. For marketing there is no need to bother, because many buyers are ready to come to those who have gaharu sap. Transportation entrepreneurs also hope that the business he pioneered can be followed by other communities and farmers in Kotabaru.

Especially if you remember that there are still many sleeping areas that are dormant. "If land sleeping in our area is developed by planting agarwood, then 10-15 years later it will produce hundreds of millions of money," Miran explained. Previously, Miran had tried a number of garden plants, but the results were not like planting gaharu. in one adult tree can produce tens of millions of dollars,
